True Beauty
I found True Beauty by Yaongyi on Webtoons a few years ago when looking for something to read. I had a list of what I wanted: established episodes, an author who updated consistently, and an ongoing story. True Beauty meets all of those. Sadly, the comic ended last year, though it had a good run for about 3-4 years.
What True Beauty is about
True Beauty is about a girl named Jugyeong who learns to love herself through makeup, and we learn about her life. There is more to it as we learn about her friends and relationships, how she deals with job pressures, and her self-confidence. There are some heavy topics in there, like eating disorders, self-harm, and stalking, and we, as the viewers, watch as Jugyeong figures out how to cope with this. A few things I would have liked to have seen more in the comics is her family life, as some things were left to the imagination. Like I knew she had a dad, but we rarely saw him, and I would have liked to have seen more about her relationship with her mom. For the most part, though, I think the author did a great job exploring her relationships outside of the home and showing Jugyeong growing into a person.
While the comic has ended, you can still read Webtoons or buy graphic novels. I like owning books, so I have slowly been buying graphic novels, and re-reading them has been fun. This comic also has an anime and a K-pop drama under the title. I haven't watched it either, so I wonder if it is the same or what has changed.
